The Science of Ozone
Ozone is a powerful disinfectant — a form of oxygen that can destroy bacteria, viruses, mold, and odors on contact, then breaks down back into oxygen when used correctly.
Oxygen with an extra atom
The oxygen we breathe is made of two atoms (O₂). Ozone is made of three (O₃). That third atom is loosely bound and highly reactive — it readily attaches to and breaks apart bacteria, viruses, and odor molecules. Once it has done its job, ozone simply reverts back to ordinary oxygen.
From oxygen to disinfectant and back
Generation
An ozone generator passes oxygen through an electrical charge, splitting O₂ and forming O₃ on-site.
Oxidation
The extra atom attacks the cell walls of bacteria, viruses, and mold, and breaks down odor molecules.
Reversion
With nothing left to react with, ozone reverts to oxygen — leaving no residue behind.
Stronger and cleaner than chlorine
Faster acting
Ozone oxidizes far faster than chlorine and kills a broader range of microorganisms.
No residue
It reverts to oxygen, leaving no chemical by-products on surfaces, food, or in water.
Reaches everywhere
As a gas or dissolved in water, it penetrates corners, fabric, and pores a wipe can't reach.
Eco-friendly
Made from oxygen and electricity — no hazardous chemicals to store or transport.
⚠ Safe ozone use depends on concentration and occupancy
Ozone is powerful because it is highly reactive. For that reason, indoor use must be controlled, measured, and managed based on whether people or animals are present.
Occupied spaces
Keep ozone at or below 0.1 ppm when people or animals are present.
Higher treatment
If ozone goes above 0.1 ppm, the area should be empty of people, pets, and animals.
Ventilation
After treatment, ventilate the space and allow ozone to break down before re-entry.
Re-entry
Return only when the generator is off and ozone has dropped back to a safe level.
For strong odor removal, smoke treatment, mold odor, car treatment, hotel rooms, gyms, restaurants, and closed spaces, high-concentration ozone should be treated as an empty-space service, not a treatment while people or pets are inside.
Powerful — and used responsibly
Because ozone is a strong oxidant, it is applied in controlled concentrations and, for air treatment above occupied-space limits, in unoccupied spaces. Used correctly by trained operators, it is a clean disinfection and odor treatment method with no lasting chemical residue.
