What is ethylene?

A natural gas that can accelerate ripening and ageing

Ethylene is a naturally occurring plant hormone released by many fruits and plant materials. In enclosed storage and transport environments, ethylene can accumulate and affect sensitive produce and flowers.

Why ethylene matters

Some fruits naturally produce ethylene as they ripen. When ethylene builds up around other produce, it can accelerate ripening, softening, colour change and senescence in ethylene-sensitive products.

The goal is control, not simply removal

Ethylene management works best as part of a broader post-harvest strategy that may also include temperature control, humidity management, ventilation and correct separation of produce.

Where it is used

Ethylene Control Across the Fresh Supply Chain

Darbune solutions can be adapted to retail, storage, growing and transport environments.

Cold Rooms

Ethylene control for fruit, vegetable and flower storage areas.

Fruit Shops

Support freshness where different fruits are stored and displayed together.

Flower Shops

Help reduce ethylene exposure in display areas and floral cold rooms.

Greenhouses

Air-treatment options for growing environments where ethylene control is required.

Refrigerated Containers

Ethylene management during refrigerated transport and temporary storage.

How it works

From Ethylene Buildup to Controlled Air

Effective ethylene control depends on the product, room size, airflow, temperature and expected ethylene load.

1

Understand the Product

Identify the produce or flowers being stored and their sensitivity to ethylene.

2

Evaluate the Space

Consider room volume, ventilation, storage density, temperature and airflow.

3

Select the Media

Choose a suitable ethylene-control media, filter or scrubber configuration.

4

Maintain Performance

Replace or service the media based on exposure, operating conditions and product requirements.

Our solutions

Ethylene-Control Media & Filtration

Darbune can select different formats depending on whether the application is a small retail refrigerator, a cold room, greenhouse or refrigerated transport container.

KMnO₄-Based Media

Potassium permanganate-based media oxidises ethylene and can be used in suitable contained filter or scrubber formats.

Zeolite / Mineral Carriers

Porous mineral carriers can support active ethylene-control formulations and provide a high-contact-area media structure.

Custom Filter Formats

Sachets, cartridges and air-treatment filters can be selected according to storage volume, airflow and operating conditions.

Why it matters

Protect Freshness Across Storage and Transport

Slower Premature RipeningHelp reduce unnecessary exposure to accumulated ethylene.
Better Quality RetentionSupport firmness, appearance and freshness as part of proper storage.
Reduced Product LossBetter post-harvest management can help reduce avoidable spoilage and waste.
Longer Marketable LifeSupport shelf-life management for produce and flowers when conditions are properly controlled.

Ethylene control works best as part of a complete storage strategy

Ethylene filtration does not replace refrigeration, humidity management, ventilation or correct produce handling. The strongest results come from combining ethylene control with proper post-harvest storage practices.
